Former WWE wrestler Al Snow appeared on the Ross Report – the podcast of WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross – last week. Among other topics they discussed women’s wrestling & Snow brought up Sable as a prime example of someone able to draw attention from both men & women & sell tickets by doing so. JR also tells his side of the famous story on how Rena was hired by Vince McMahon although she wasn’t even looking for a job.

Highlights [full audio above]

Snow: The sole existance of professional wrestlers is to sell tickets. Let’s face facts. Men will pay to see a beautiful woman. I use Sable as the perfect example. My dad used to tell me the difference between a pretty girl, a beautiful woman & a gorgeous lady was the fact that all 3 looked exactly the same but when a pretty girl walked into a room all the boys would stop and stare, when a beautiful woman walks into a room all boys, men & women would stop and stare but when a gorgeous lady walks into a room the whole room stops. They all look exactly alike but they have that thing about them, they know how to work the “woman-thing”, they have that sex appeal, they have that charisma, that it-factor. When they walk into a room they can make that room stop. If a woman knows how to do that – and I think you’ll agree – Sable knew how to definitely do that.

JR: She had “it”. She had great charisma.

Snow: She didn’t know how to just walk into a room. She knew how to walk into a room that had 20,000 people in it and make the whole room stop.

JR: I remember when Vince [McMahon] and I interviewed Marc Mero who is married to Sable at that time. And she came along just for the meeting. She wasn’t even looking for work. They weren’t looking for her to get a job there. I remember we came to terms with Marc. Vince liked his look, [..] the little Richard thing that Marc did in WCW. The meeting was over and Vince and I got back together and he said “Do you feel like we maybe hired the wrong one?”. And I said “She’s got something that’s very special.” And it was just that look. She carried herself like a star, your attention, your focus came to her. […] She was special. She was a true star.

According to a guy who was sitting near the ring at WrestleMania 31 today Rena was ringside for the main event (off-camera), Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns. It’s not confirmed as I’ve not been able to find any photos & I also didn’t see her on TV during the event. confirmed earlier that she is in Santa Clara with Brock so it’s possible.

Rena’s husband Brock Lesnar announced on ESPN earlier today that he signed a multi-year contract with WWE on monday. In various interviews he did today he mentioned that it took him a year to make the decision to fully retire from MMA & stay with the pro-wrestling company. In the end he chose WWE because of his family & health.

“The fighter in me wants to continue, but at this stage in my life, it ain’t just about me anymore,” Brock said. “You put your pride to the side. You hug your wife and your kids.”

According to the Wrestling Observer Rena was one of the people who pushed for him to stay with WWE, instead of going back to professional fighting.

UFC & WWE threw crazy sums of money at Brock in their attempt to sign him. UFC apparently was offering him a deal worth 10 times what he originally made in the UFC. Then when Brock called them to inform them he wants to sign with WWE instead, UFC doubled their offer once more. No word out yet how much WWE is paying him.

“Sable” was briefly trending on Twitter during Raw on monday. During a promo Paul Heyman said that the #1 contender for Brock’s WWE championship has to “invade Brock’s home, take his wife & food off his children’s plate”. This naturally led to people talking about Rena/Sable on social media.

Categories: Rena News recently interviewed WWE seamstress Sandra Gray (Rena thanked Sandra in her speech when winning the Slammy Awards for “Dressed to kill” in 1997) and she told them how she got hired by WWE partly thanks to Rena and Marc Mero:

In 1994, a young woman walked into a Marietta, Georgia fabric shop looking for someone to make a last-minute costume for her boyfriend. Two years later, that young woman would become Sable, WWE Diva, wrestling fashion icon, and all-around babe. Her boyfriend (now ex-husband) was Johnny B. Badd aka Marc Mero, and he needed something to wear for the Pay-Per-View event he was wrestling in that week in North Carolina.

The woman in the Marietta fabric shop was Sandra Gray. Although it was the middle of a busy prom season and she had never sewed on spandex before, this woman was begging her, so Gray told Sable to come by her house later and she’d get it done. That chance encounter led Gray to a new career as a seamstress and designer for the WWE, a job she still holds today, over 20 years later.

When she first began, Gray wasn’t familiar with pro wrestling, but her two young sons were.

“They knew all about who [Johnny B. Badd] was,” she remembers. “They were super excited. So I took on this job, never having sewn on spandex before, and I made him a pair of trunks. I didn’t know the technique, and I didn’t have anyone to ask. I just did the best I could, and I was going to get the chance to see my work on TV. My whole family was excited.”

Her family watched the match and kept screaming “Put him down!” at the television as Johnny B. Badd was repeatedly yanked up and put on the turnbuckle. Much to her relief, his trunks stayed up and, after the show, Marc Mero called and thanked her for the outfit.

“That just meant so much to me that he took the time to [call],” she said. “He did and that’s how I got my start in professional wrestling. I must have done a good job because he started telling people where he got his trunks from, and people started to call me. I basically just taught myself.”

Gray noted on Twitter a couple of months ago that her favorite outfits to design were those for Sable & that she still has a a picture of Sable’s first Playboy cover in her office.
